Second Chance Job Fair: A Testament to Community Strength and Presidential Support

Weslaco, TX — In an inspiring display of community collaboration and support, the Second Chance Job Fair held in Weslaco has marked a monumental success, aligning perfectly with President Joe Biden's Proclamation declaring April as the Second Chance Month in 2024. Workforce Solutions (WFS) and the Weslaco Economic Development Corporation (EDC), saw a great turnout, underlining the importance of providing opportunities for individuals seeking to rebuild their lives.

The fair brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including federal, state, and local parole and probation officers, who played a crucial role in connecting job seekers with potential employers. Many individuals, who are often overlooked, have multiple barriers to overcome such as: lack of family support, access to resources, and difficulty finding employment.

"We had a great turnout at our Second Chance Job Fair," said Francisco Almaraz, WFS Chief Executive Officer. "It was our best turnout for a job fair focused on serving justice-involved individuals. The centralized location of Weslaco and collaboration with Weslaco EDC undoubtedly contributed to its success."

With 25 employers and 180 job seekers in attendance, the job fair facilitated over 200 interviews that resulted in several on-site hires, showcasing the tangible benefits of such initiatives.

This job fair serves as a beacon of hope for those looking to turn their lives around and stands as a testament to the effectiveness of community and governmental support in fostering an environment where second chances are not just possible, but celebrated. As the local workforce development board, Workforce Solutions serves Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy counties. The primary goal of the WFS Board is to respond to the needs of local employers and workers through locally designed, demand-driven workforce development initiatives.
